A solid mix of innovative ideas, quality writing, and reliable themes, this book combines strong character development with a realisitic blend of current and future small unit tactics and equipment. The story is well-written and engaging, covering fresh ground while still embracing the classical elements of SciFi writing.
Fans of military science fiction have a treat in James R. Elliott's new offering in the genre, "To Duel With the Hands of God".
The premise and plot, although certainly solid enough, are not the main attractions here. The lure of "Duel" is the painstaking effort made by Elliott-- a special operations professional himself-- to completely immerse the reader in the personalities, attitudes, culture and day-to-day business of a special ops tactical unit-- whose area of operations happens to be the depths of interstellar space.
Elliot's efforts are entirely successful, replete with misunderstandings by suspicicious non-SpecOp superiors, operational malfunctions of the Gadget of the Day, and above all, the terror and exhilaration of being at the sharp end of the stick with team mates you can trust to the death. Carefully constructed with the sorts of minute detail that instantly bring the characters and their missions to life, "To Duel With the Hands of God" is a gritty, ultra-realistic depiction of futuristic Special Warfare and those who will conduct it.
To Duel With the Hands of God is a fast-paced and exciting Sci-Fi novel. It fits the classic definition of what Sci-Fi is all about - set in Earth's future with completely believable and appropriate technological advancements, a strong plot and conflict, an excellent cast of memorable characters, including the indomitable Sgt. Dalmon Bri, the fiery Shinee (you don't dare call her Gladys), and a really bad guy, Colonel Macthieu, the true embodiment of the bigger "bad guy," the Corporations. As a reader, I loved to hate Macthieu. Great outer-space action sequences abound, and the entire adventure results in a very satisfying ending. Mr. Elliott's military background and law enforcement experiences add an excellent element of realism to the action sequences, the language and relationships of the characters, and the ambiance of the story in general. For you lovers of hardcore sci-fi adventure, this is one not to be missed.
